Gig is a new all-electric car sharing program offered in the City of Sacramento. It’s a one-way or free-floating car share service, which means you can pick up a car in one location, and drop it off in a different location within Gig’s service area, known as the HomeZone.

The HomeZone is Gig’s service area; it is the area where you can start and end a trip. Gig’s Sacramento HomeZone is 13 square miles that largely encompasses the Central City. The HomeZone boundaries are viewable in the Gig app. You can drive a Gig out of the HomeZone, but you will need to return the car and end the trip back in the HomeZone.

Gig has a fleet of 260 All-Electric Chevy Bolts available for use in Sacramento. The Chevy Bolt features room for five, plenty of cargo space, bike racks, and much more.

To get started, download the GIG Car Share app and signup to become a Gig Member. Next, use the app to find an available Gig near you, unlock it, then start the engine and drive. Making multiple stops? Use the app to hold onto your Gig when it's parked between stops.

• Surcharge over 250 miles per trip: $0.45/mile
• Parking fees outside the HomeZone: All standard parking laws and fees are enforced outside the HomeZone.
• Bay Area Bridge Tolls: Every car is registered with the FasTrak system. Tolls are automatically billed to your account the following month.

Gigs can be parked in any legal street space that permits parking for one hour or more in the HomeZone, including metered or time zone spaces that allow one hour or more parking and are not otherwise restricted. The general rule is, if the parking sign is green for one hour or more, you're in the clear. If it's red, you can't park there.

Do's

Any one hour or longer parking spot if it is a:

• Metered street parking spot, or
• Time zone parking spot, and
• Residential permitted spot, marked with a green sign (excluding B Permits)
• Not otherwise restricted

Dont's

• No 15-minute or 30-minute meters (no metered spots under one hour).
• No yellow, red, blue, green parking spots (i.e., no restricted zones such as loading, handicapped, events, parking lots, private spaces).
• Don’t park in residential-permitted spaces, check the signs, if they’re red you can’t end your trip.
• In West Sacramento don't park in B Permit Zones. 
• No parking within 12 hours of city services like street sweeping, street closures, or other posted restrictions.
• No parking in private parking lots (i.e., Amtrak or Sacramento train station parking lot).
• Don't end your trip outside the Sacramento HomeZone when driving an Electric Gig (green pin).

Step 1. Finding an Electric Vehicle (EV) charging station: Using your personal device, search for the nearest EV charging station, or, feel free to give us a call at (800) 464-0889 and we'll help find one for you.

Step 2. Arriving at an EV charging station: As a reminder, the charging port on the Electric Gig (Chevy Bolt) is on the driver's side of the car, near the front wheel. Just push on the cap to release, and open.

Step 3. Start the charge: Just like refueling, Gig covers the cost to recharge our Electric Vehicles. Once you find a station, pull up to an available charger and charge the vehicle. After you’ve paid, snap a pic of your receipt, and submit it here for a refund. We will provide a refund of your rental fee in the amount of your charging fee, which will be shown as a credit to your card account originally used for your rental. We’re here for you if you encounter any problems or have questions.

How long does it take?
Depending on the charger (and how much charge you need), recharging can take several hours.

For example, there are three different kinds of chargers:

• The fastest are Level 3 – or DCFC – chargers, which can take around two hours to reach a charge of about 75 percent.
• A Level 2 charger might take as long as eight hours for a full charge.
• A Level 1 charge is simply plugging into any wall socket. We don’t recommend doing this, as it takes more than 20 hours to charge up.

How do I get reimbursed?
After you’ve paid for your recharge, snap a pic of your receipt, and submit it here for a refund. We will provide a refund of your rental fee in the amount of your charging fee, which will be shown as a credit to your card account originally used for your rental.

• GIG Car Share is a private company headquartered in Berkeley, CA providing service now in Sacramento.
• Like other car and bike share programs, Gig is permitted by the City to operate in Sacramento and follows city laws.
• GIG Car Share is one of several programs the City is supporting to enable green mobility options and infrastructure for our communities and residents.

• Bike and scooter share programs such as JUMP
• Multi-modal transportation investments such as protected bike lanes
• Operation of EV charging infrastructure
• The Our Community Car Share program
• Support for electric bus and shuttle programs

Car Share vendors can apply for special parking privileges in the City’s right-of-way if they meet several City requirements. Gig is a permittee under the City's Carshare Framework, and meets all City requirements, such as:

• Meeting the minimum insurance requirements
• Provided an outreach plan
• Submits a data and monitoring plan
• Operates a fleet of car share vehicles with consistent branding
• Pays annual parking fees
• Operates as a membership-based service
• Uses an approved technology to collect real-time parking info
• Allows qualified members to make vehicle trips with the use of a shared vehicle from an unstaffed location

Car Share vendors that do not have City parking permits must abide by all parking regulations, like any other vehicle.

• One-way car share has been proven to successfully remove 7-11 private vehicles from local neighborhoods (Susan Shaheen, 2015, UC Berkeley-Transportation Sustainability Research Center).
• Providing residents, workers, and visitors with access to an affordable, convenient, and environmentally friendly car share option will give more people the opportunity to rely less on a private personal vehicle, helping to free up City streets.

• Gig cars typically move around and don’t stay parked for as long as privately owned vehicles do.
• Car share vehicles are typically in use four times more frequently than privately owned vehicles.
• As the demand for Gigs increases over time, the median parking time will gradually decrease.

Like all motor vehicles, free-floating car share vehicles may park up to 72 hours in any legal parking space in accordance with the California Vehicle Code and Sacramento City Code.

• Gig encourages its Members to follow all posted signs and parking requirements.

• Gig’s Sacramento fleet operations team monitors and manages the Gig fleet, and is responsive to calls that come through the Member Care center.
• This includes ensuring the vehicles are clean, properly charged, and safely maintained.
• The fleet operations team also monitors parked vehicles to ensure Gig’s fleet complies with parking regulations such as the 72-hour limit.
• Gig worked with City of Sacramento staff as well as Sacramento City Council members to identify neighborhoods with the best potential for benefiting from one-way car share, while also evaluating characteristics and opportunities based on potential market demand.
• These include: ability to legally park on the curb-side, a reasonable population or employee density, limited access to public transportation infrastructure, and above average percentage of homes that have one or fewer cars per household.
• The HomeZone may change over time based on demand and usage hot-spots.
