Bellingham

Ramble along the edge of the Skagit River delta on the Padilla Bay Shore Trail. This outlet into Washington’s Saltish Sea is a prime birder location -- home to peregrine falcons, snowy owls and several bald eagles.

Whidbey Island

A picturesque collection of port towns and artist colonies, Whidbey Island can be accessed by ferry from Mukiteo, on the eastern side, or Port Townsend, on the western. Favored public beaches on Whidbey include Ebey’s Landing and Double Bluff Beach. 

Port Townsend 

Fort Worden Historical State Park sits on the grounds of an early 20th century Army base.  Its large coastal guns made up part of a coastal defense array known as the “Triangle of Fire.” The park at Fort Worden runs along 2 miles of beachfront and overlooks amazing views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

Mendocino - Mendocino Headlands State Park

Just south of Fort Bragg is Mendocino Headlands State Park,  home to a beautiful mix of rugged coastline, secluded beaches, and scenic trails. Winter hikers might see the migration of grey whales.

Point Reyes - Drakes Beach

Drakes Beach, at the end of Point Reyes, provides a wonderful hiking view of the bay marine life. Spot elephant seals, local elk, or sand dollars on your coastal trek. Parking here is free and plentiful.

Russian River - Gualala Point Regional Park

Head north an hour on PCH from Jenner to find the mouth of the Russian River at Gualala Point Regional Park. With a beach and an estuary, it's perfectly suited for both birding and whale watching.
