Daylight Saving – Night Time Driving Tips

Daylight Saving Time ends at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 7, 2021. Clocks will β€œfall back” one hour, giving us more daylight in the dark autumn and winter mornings.

However, this also means that the sun will be setting earlier.

To help get you prepared, here are a few tips around driving when it’s dark:

🌜 Be prepared β€” Before you head off on your trip, make sure you familiarize yourself with where the headlight controls are located in the car.

🌜 Know these headlight guidelines β€” Use your headlights within 30 minutes of sunset (and 30 minutes before sunrise)." Headlights should be turned on if you cannot see at least 1000 feet in front of you, and when it's raining, foggy, snowing, or cloudy.

🌜 Let there be light β€” Use your high beams only when there’s no oncoming traffic, but make sure to switch back to low beams when you see a car approaching. Don’t use high beams in fog β€” that can make visibility worse.

🌜  Slow down β€” Adjust your speed to take visibility into account. Give yourself distance of four or more seconds behind the car in front of you.

🌜  Watch for pedestrians and bikes β€” It can be hard to see walkers, joggers, and bike riders after dark. Take extra precautions and look both ways before moving forward through intersections.

🌜  Avoid looking into headlights β€” When cars are coming at you, don’t look directly into their headlights, as this can temporarily blind you. Cast your gaze down, and focus on the white line.

🌜  Stay alert β€” Avoid distractions. Take frequent breaks during long trips.

🌜 Get rest if needed β€” If you feel sleepy, find a safe place to pull over and get some rest.
