August 30 is National Beach Day

What’s your favorite part of going to the beach? Is it relaxing on a blanket, getting in water, or is it just enjoying watching the waves? To celebrate all things sand, sea (and river!), summer (we’re hanging on), and safety. Ready to join us? Just grab a Gig and go...to the beach!

Here are a Few Favorite Sandy Spots Near You:

Seattle

Discovery Park is the largest city park in Seattle. It is a 500+ acre natural area overlooking Puget Sound. Besides featuring more than 11 miles of walking trails, the park offers two beach areas. Make sure you have plenty of time to explore this great space!
(The Discover Pass in your Gig covers parking.)

You’ll find Alki Beach in West Seattle. Once an amusement park, this 2.5mile area has been attracting visitors for over 100 years. Walk on the trail or hang out on the sand. Note that this beach allows beach fires, but make sure to read the rules and regulations before unpacking the s’more supplies.

Campfires are also allowed at the large and popular Golden Gardens Park. Found in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle, here you will find swimming access, a boat dock, beach volleyball courts, hiking trails, and an off-leash area for your pup (dogs are not allowed on the beach).

SF Bay Area

Headed to Baker Beach in San Francisco? Though swimming is not recommended due to unsafe currents, you will be treated to a beautiful view of the Golden Gate Bridge! This mile-long beach has a picnic area with tables, grills, and restrooms. Bring your jacket — it IS an SF beach, after all!

Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach runs along the southern side of the main island of Alameda in the East Bay. Bring a picnic, watch the windsurfers, and relish in the view of San Francisco. A paved walking trail and a newly revamped bike path run alongside the beach. Crab Cove, on the western side of the beach, features a visitor center and aquarium, great for all ages!

Ocean Beach is a 3.5-mile stretch of beach that spans the western side of the Sunset District of San Francisco. Part of the Golden Gate National Parks Conservatory, Ocean Beach is known for its challenging currents (for experienced surfers only). Take a stroll, fly a kite, and visit the Beach Chalet or Park Chalet, popular stops for a bite to eat.

Albany Beach is managed and maintained by the East Bay Regional Park District. It is located on the Albany shoreline. It can get windy in the afternoons, and the water here is great for kayaking, stand-up paddling, and kiteboarding (depending on the wind and your level of experience).

Sacramento river beaches

Once a hidden gem, popular Sand Cove Park allows access to the American River. Besides green space and a beach, it also features a nature area. Parking can be limited, so keep that in mind. Bring your inflatables and get ready for a relaxing and refreshing time in the water.

Forty-acre Miller Regional Park features picnic areas, Sacramento River access, a marina, and a dock. Bring your family or friends, a blanket, a picnic, and a book, and enjoy the river view. Or bring your boat and your jet skis for some water action!

Located near California State University - Sacramento, Paradise Beach is a recreational area with a sandy beach. Come for the swimming, fishing, or just to have a nice picnic by American River. The water is a little ways from the parking lot, so be prepared for a short walk.
